Last Saturday, Christine stopped by briefly, well she thought it would be brief, but with the two of us...that's never happened! As always, I was whining about my much hated living room carpet. It was ugly and stained, I could never get it cleaned, it smelled, etc....
Apparently tired of the diatribe (she's heard at least 72 times: 6 years in the house, at least one whine about the carpet per month). Christine decided on the proactive approach and asked me: "Why don't we tear up a corner and have a look?"
So here is how it all began last Saturday at 6:30

It was a mix of untouched oak flooring and 80 year old stain, but overall, it was promising. And by this time:

There was no turning back! We worked for 2 hours and tore up almost all of the carpet except for a little bit under the couch. then it was time for ice cream. Here are some photos from Saturday, in no particular order:

Then Sunday came and I spent the day pulling up tons of staples that had held the carpet pad in palce. I also had to remove the tack board that framed the perimeter of the room. It was tedious, but it involved prying, something that I have a fondness for....
I also called Paul P to see if he was still in the business of doing floors, and sure enough he was! So he came over and checked it out. The best part was that Paul was available to do the job that week! Paul has been working with hardwood for over 50 years! So I was happy he would do it, plus I already knew him as he was my ex-husband's uncle. So that helped! :)

After Wednesday, Paul returned for a final sanding. Then on Friday he glazed the floor. It's all done! That easy, in less than a week! It's amazing what you can accomplish in not too much time! I am so happy with this floor! The old carpet was heavily stained and smelled awful.
Apparently, it had offended Thomas cat too. Thomas is the cat that no one sees because he hides under the couch. Well, I now think it is due to the smell of the old carpet. After I removed the carpet, Thomas came out. He has let me pet him and pick him up every day since I moved the carpet out!!!! Miracles never do cease.
And this new floor will be so easy to clean! So here she is, my oak floor, age 80:
